Deck Chair
Characterised
by clarity of both design and function, Børge Mogensen’s Deck Chair isn’t just
a piece to be merely admired from a distance: the FSC™-certified teak design
invites us to sit down and relax in the great outdoors thanks to wooden slats
shaped to follow the natural curves of the body. Crafted with a generous,
reclining seat and a frame angled for comfort – and with the option to add a
padded fabric cushion for additional support – the functional and flexible
chair can easily be moved to catch the best light. When not in use, it can be
folded flat and stored away or hung on a wall as a decorative feature. Like all
of Børge Mogensen’s furniture designs, the BM Deck Chair combines functional
strength with natural materials and a timeless aesthetic. Carefully crafted
details nod to the designer’s background as a cabinetmaker and draw clear
stylistic references to the American Shakers and 19th Century English furniture
design.

Børge Mogensen (1914 – 1972) is known as one of the great Danish designers of the twentieth century for his quality furniture and strong, minimalist designs. Characterised by simple, solid lines and durable construction, his clean aesthetics and precise proportions embody Danish modernism. Having initially trained as a cabinet-maker before studying furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, Børge Mogensen later studied architecture at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He later became design director at the Danish Co-Operative Society, FDB, where he focused on creating well-designed, functional furniture that could be industrially produced for the general public. HAY has recreated Børge Mogensen’s timeless J41 and J42 chairs, which were part of the J-Series he designed during his time at FBD. |
